About this book

Why do we feel the urge to create and become authors of any kind? What motivates us to speak, write or paint? Why do we occupy silence with words, words with ideas, images with thoughts, every square meter with a structure or building, and use even the last letter of the alphabet with a particular intention? Why are we constantly looking for new ways to shape both the physical and intellectual space, and why are we so eager to impose those ways on others? And above all, why do we keep crowding the world with the things we create and never seem to know when to stop?

Space, and what we do with it, is the subject matter of this book. Starting from the “original place” that is the natural world, the text moves forward demonstrating through its own composition how each line and letter, each image and word, each idea, argument or reason that is expressed through any form of human creation, no matter how big or small, is ultimately an attempt to impose and occupy. And that this, in turn, is what has led us to live in an oversaturated world.

Written, designed, typeset and edited by Diego Berjón. Includes the epilogue El cansancio de la lengua [An Exhausted Language], which questions the cultural relevance of Mexico throughout the world, as well as the authority Mexicans have over the space that belongs to them.
